Today ( 24th September) we had our first ever GSMUN session for the year 2020. The attendance was far from what we needed but nevertheless it was a satisfactory number of 6 delegates who were eager to begin with the session. The first step of the session was to introduce the delegates regarding the role of the real world United Nations. The delegates were responsive and were then informed about the THIMUN PROCEDURE and how the model united nation was going to function online.

Today (on the 25th of September) we started our meeting with a sample resolution paper which was from ECOFIN but it was on ‘microfinance’. Since not many delegates were aware of what microfinance was and its various features, not many delegates participated in the debate. Also not many delegates attended the conference or meeting (only 6 delegates were present) so not many delegates were active in the debate. Thus Harshul and I decided to present a different resolution paper of a different committee so the delegates know how to debate formally and avoid using personal pronouns. So the idea of presenting a sample resolution paper and involving all the delegates for a debate worked very effectively and the delegates got to know how to structure a resolution paper as well. The delegates did not take part in the debates apart from a few delegates who took part in the debates actively. The attendance in our committee is really weak and most of the 9th graders did not attend any meeting so owing to that we could not make much progress with them.

On the 28th of September, the meeting progressed with the attendance being taken which was a greater number than usual. After which the committee was divided into two due to the newcomers who did not understand the MUN procedures therefore. The co chair meet took control of the main portion of the committee and which progressed into a heated debate between the delegates on a mock resolution on ‘NUCLEAR ENERGY’. The main contributors of this were Ujan (delegate of USA) , Swayam( delegate of Palestine) , Aarav( Delegate of China) and Rajeev ( Delegate of France). In the second portion of the committee chaired by the head, the 9th graders new attendees were present for an introduction. They were first explained the main role of The UN and the different variables and factors which run the model united nations. The delegates were shown sample position and resolution papers and how to follow the THIMUN procedures throughout all the sessions. They were interactive which showed as a positive sign for ECOFIN as more delegates would be able portray their viewpoints during the main meeting.

On the 29th of September, the session commenced with the attendance and then we asked the delegates who were willing to present their resolutions on the final day of the GSMUN and also what agenda they are going to pick. After deciding upon the main submitters of the resolutions we asked the delegates to pick their co-submitters for their resolutions. We took a large portion of our session’s time on deciding the co-submitters of each of the delegates presenting the resolutions. Moreover we moved upon the sample resolution paper as we wanted to conduct a mock debate for the delegates so they familiarize with the usage of formal pronouns. The sample resolution paper was on the ‘illicit trading of diamonds’ in which delegates of USA, Palestine and Afghanistan actively debated on the 3rd operative clause (subpart a). Finally the session ended with the delegate of the USA proposing an amendment which failed by a clear majority as only the delegate of Afghanistan voted for the amendment. Thus we ended the session with an inactive debate where not many delegates took part in the debate and also due to the weak attendance we could not make much progress with them.

Today we started the session by taking attendance and then proceeded the session by addressing the delegates about their deadlines to make their resolution papers and position papers. Afterwards we divided the main submitters and their co submitters into different meet links and gave them rest of the time to prepare their resolution papers. Furthermore we then cleared the doubts of various delegates who did not know what to do or how to draw up operative clauses or perambulatory clauses for their resolution papers. The co head (Meet Dobariya) went to the link with France and its co submitters where they were stuck at making preambulatory clauses and then showed them a sample resolution paper which helped the delegate of state of Palestine (co-submitter of France) who was drawing up France’s resolution in the absence of the delegate of France. The delegate of USA started to make his resolution paper along with the delegate of Afghanistan and UAE and had minor issues regarding the position paper which were cleared up.

Today like usual we started the session by taking the attendance of the committee and then the delegates were dispersed into their various google meet links to make their resolutions along with their co-submitters and teachers. We cleared doubts and helped various delegates with their resolutions. Delegate of china had a doubt about adding a sub clause about the ‘age factor’ in acquiring loans and starting a business in his resolution so the co head helped him structure the clause. Afterwards we collected everybody’s position papers and resolution paper for further correction and to accumulate the proper number of documents required for the final day.
